Many people don’t realise that shot blasting is a method that is commonly used for cleaning and smoothing down surfaces. This method involves firing thousands of tiny fragments usually metal balls or sand at the surface of the substrate.
Shot-blasting is commonly used on such surfaces as steel before painting as this will leave a more pleasant finish. Shot-blasting can also be used on many other surfaces as part of the preparation before painting. Metals such as iron and steel are hard wearing so this means the process of shot blasting is just enough to clean and alter the top layer of the surface.
Another surface in which can be shot blasted is concrete, this is a process which is used in warehouses and garages should the floors need cleaning. As concrete is an extremely hard substrate this means the shots fired do not damage the overall surface of the concrete and simply leave the floor smooth and clean.
After shot-blasting we would recommend using a brush applied primer as after shot blasting this can cause a blast profile and if not primed with with the correct film thickness this can lead to pinhole rusting. Pinhole rusting is a type of corrosion that appears on a metal surface.
One of the primers we would recommend which can be used on a shot blasted metal surface is Rust-Oleum 569/ 580. This product is a single pack quick drying metal primer highly suited for bare/blasted metal. This product can also be used on on slightly rusted metal and is frequently used for heavy industrial applications.
We also supply aerosols which are suitable for smaller items which have been shot blasted. PRO XL Alu Zinc Primer works well on shot blasted surfaces because the zinc coatings acts as a cathodic protection barrier between a harsh environment and the metal surface.
There are many different products which are suitable to be used on top of substrates which have been shot blasted but it is always best to check with a technical advisor to confirm the product is suitable for your substrate.
