Origin Story

Sigma Coatings was originally a Dutch paint company. It was the summation of three paint companies being merged to combine the properties of all of them. In 1999 it was incorporated into SigmaKalon; then on 1 January 2008 it became a part of the US company: PPG Industries .

This brand has branched out throughout the years, and it is now used worldwide. After being bought by the American PPG it opened the way for it to expand beyond Europe. Under the Sigma Coatings brand various types of high quality coatings and paint are sold. These can be used for decorating, marine, protective and industrial purposes. It has a strong brand identity in the architectural, shipping, protective and industrial application of paint and coatings worldwide.

Did you know Sigma. . .

You might imagine Sigma only being used on things like oil rigs, or industrial machines; however they have been used on the Queen’s Helicopter! We were instrumental in providing SigmaDur for the helicopter for its UV resistance as well as flexibility. The helicopter, the first air-frame dedicated solely to royal use, entered service on 21 December 1998. The model itself is a commercial helicopter widely used around the world, although the Queen’s helicopter is only fitted with six seats for more comfort.

We have previously done a range of work for the Royal Palaces. This relationship led them to contact us when they needed advice and specifications. Helicopters require more technical products than palaces do, which inspired us to look into the Sigma range. The success of this project has led to us being contacted for more Palace work and also government work. Can’t say much better than having Royal approval . . .

Closer to Home . . .

Marine coatings are one of the biggest areas that Sigma specialise in. Their Marine and Protective coatings are renown for being the best available. Sadly not all of us have a million pound yacht to paint, but you’d be amazed how often enquiries come in for paints that can remain submerged under water, or are suitable for repeat exposure to water. Anti-fouling coatings in particular are a very niche market, which comes up as a necessity for a lot of underwater specifications, and it is one of Sigma’s specialities.

One of our favourite jobs that we have done with Sigma was when we made the spec and supplied the products for a large commercial vessel in Hull. They used a range of colours of Sigmacover 630 and Sigmacover 456. Both of these coatings have been proven to work in high pressure situations both on land and in a marine environment. This was important for the job, as the vessel was not always active. It had to be able to withstand the high pressure environment of the ocean, as well as the potential damages and issues that come about when it is docked. The versatility of this range of paints meant that the spec that was provided is able to adapt depending on what environment it is placed in.

On Our Doorstep . . .

Many of you may know that in Wolverhampton we have a canal running through the city, and there are always people on it renovating or revamping their canal boats. We have quite a few clients that do this for a living, and they use Sigma to give them long-lasting results. They use a lot of Rust-oleum products for the areas that stay above the water; as obviously a canal isn’t the most damaging environment. But under the waterline they need something more high tech and durable, which is where Sigma comes in.

Our customers use Sigmacover 300, a coal tar epoxy that protects the underside of the canal boat. It protects the boat not only from the issues that arise from being submerged in water, but also from the debris and greenery that grows around the edges of the canals.

These products have even become so popular that they park their canal boats outside of our warehouse to load up their paint!
