Safewood Anti-Viral Mattwood is a clear, matt-finish topcoat designed to provide both fire protection and antimicrobial defence for interior timber. Applied over Thermoguard Fire Varnish Basecoat as part of a certified system, it achieves BS EN Class B s2 d0 fire rating while actively killing coronavirus, flu and harmful bacteria on contact.

Ideal for doors, frames, sills and trim in high-traffic areas such as schools, care homes, hospitals and housing, this advanced varnish delivers a durable, decorative finish with built-in protection. It reduces bacteria by 99% in 4 hours and coronavirus by 93.4% in just 2 hours, according to ISO-approved testing.

Whether you’re upgrading existing timber or working on new installations, Safewood Mattwood is a reliable choice for both fire safety compliance and hygiene-critical environments.

Surface Preparation

Ensure all wood surfaces are clean, dry and sound
Remove any loose, flaking or suspect coatings
Abrade smooth or glossy surfaces with 120-grit abrasive to provide a mechanical key
Degrease with a suitable cleaner and wipe clean
Previously varnished surfaces must be well abraded and cleaned thoroughly
For knotty woods or light shades, treat knots with shellac-free sealer if required

Note: Apply only over Safewood Basecoat or Thermoguard Fire Varnish Basecoat for fire-rated performance.

Directions for Use

Stir thoroughly before use - do not shake
Apply by synthetic brush or short-pile gloss roller
Maintain a wet edge to avoid lap marks
Apply 1–2 coats depending on required protection:
- 1 coat over Fire Varnish Basecoat for fire protection only
- 2 coats for full anti-viral and anti-bacterial performance
Do not apply if condensation is likely before full drying
Clean tools with white spirit immediately after use

Free delivery on all orders over £100 + VAT within UK mainland.
For orders under £100 + VAT, a standard shipping fee will apply at checkout.
Orders are typically delivered within 2–5 working days after receipt of cleared payment.

We use Parcelforce and FedEx as our main carriers, though this may vary based on location or size of your order.

Orders placed after 12 midday (Monday–Friday) are usually dispatched the next working day.
If you require urgent dispatch or Saturday delivery, please call us before placing your order.

Parcel Shipments

All international parcel deliveries are handled by FedEx International. Shipping times and costs vary depending on destination, parcel size, and service availability.

Pallet Shipments (Including Dangerous Goods)

For palletised orders — including those containing dangerous goods - we work with independent specialist freight companies experienced in compliant global hazardous materials transport.
Due to the nature of these shipments, pricing and transit times are provided on a case‑by‑case basis.

Some coatings are made to order, particularly from premium brands like Sigma/PPG. These orders:
