Rust-Oleum Metal Cladding Primer – Fast-Drying Anti-Corrosion Primer for Metal Surfaces

Rust-Oleum Metal Cladding Primer is a single-pack, water-based anti-corrosion primer designed for use on a variety of sound metal substrates, including bare or blasted steel, galvanized metal, and plastisol. With low VOC content and excellent flow-out, it offers quick drying—ready for overcoating in just 1 hour. Available in three colour options to enhance the opacity and coverage of topcoats, it’s ideal for both new projects and maintenance work.

Key Features:

  • Single-Pack Anti-Corrosion Protection – No mixing required

  • Fast Drying – Overcoat in as little as 1 hour

  • Water-Based & Low VOC – Safer and more environmentally friendly

  • Versatile Surface Compatibility – For steel, galvanized metal, and plastisol®

  • Available in 3 Colours – Improves opacity and topcoat performance

  • Excellent Flow-Out – Smooth, even application

Application Details:

  • Surface Types: Bare/blasted steel, galvanized metal, plastisol®

  • Dry to Overcoat: 1 hour

  • Formulation: Water-based, single-pack primer

  • Colours Available: 3 colour options for optimal topcoat coverage

Surface Preparation

Remove grease, oil and all other surface contaminations by alkaline or high pressure
(steam) cleaning in combination with appropriate detergents. For optimum results remove
rust, rust scale, mill scale and deteriorated coatings by abrasive blasting to Sa 2½ (ISO
8501-1: 1988), blast profile max. 50 µm. If blasting is not possible remove loose rust and
loose coatings by scraping and/or wire brushing to St 3 (ISO 8501-1: 1988). Zinc or
aluminium corrosion products can be removed with Surfa-Etch 108 Etching Solution
followed by rinsing with plenty of fresh water, or by brush-off blasting. Remove
deteriorated coatings by scraping and wire brushing. Sand intact coatings to roughen the
surface slightly. The surface must be clean and may be slightly damp during application.
