Surface Preparation
Ensure surface to be varnished is clean, dry, sound and free from wax, oil or any other contamination. Bare wood should be sanded to a smooth surface, always working with the grain. Oily woods such as Teak or Iroko should be cleaned with white spirit prior to application. Any excess resinous deposits around knots should be scraped off and the area cleaned with white spirit. Sound, previously varnished surfaces should be cleaned then lightly sanded to provide a key. Remove dust. Previously varnished surfaces in poor condition should be stripped back to bare wood using Blackfriar Professional Paint and Varnish Remover. Any French polish on surfaces must also be completely removed. Ensure new or bare timber is adequately preserved prior to applying wood finishes, apply Blackfriar Goldstar Clear Wood Preservative to untreated timbers where required.

Directions for Use
Stir thoroughly prior to use. The product may be applied by brush or spray. If applying by brush, apply evenly using light strokes following the grain of the wood. For best results 4 coats are recommended on new wood and 2-3 coats on previously varnished surfaces. Brush well into any joints and end grain with 2-3 coats to help prevent moisture ingress. Prior to application of the final coat or if the overcoating time is exceeded lightly abrade with fine glass paper working with the grain and remove dust.
